June 14th is Flag Day in the United States, a “federally recognized day “(though not a legal holiday) first nationally established in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson to help citizens, and especially the youth, acknowledge the anniversary of the creation of the original Stars and Stripes by Betsy Ross in 1777. At that time, President Wilson stated:

The flag which we honor and under which we serve is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought, and our purpose as a nation. It has no character but that which we give it from generation to generation. The choice is ours.”

There are many activities appropriate to Flag Day – dedicating new flags or flagpoles and retiring flags that are faded or worn are most traditional. But also accepted is the expression of additional recognition to those military personnel who are serving or who have served under the banner of the American flag.

Citizen’s Resource celebrates Flag Day with the first broadcast of their U.S. 3rd Congressional Candidate Debate between incumbent, Representative Chris Cannon and his challenger, John Jacob, at 7:00 pm on Orem City’s Community Channel (Channel 17 on Comcast Cable, Channel 15 on Mstar or Veracity Cable).

This debate is one of a series of presentations covering every race on the upcoming Utah County Primary Elections. The Primary Candidate Expo was co-sponsored by Utah Valley State College on June 10th and filmed on live on location in the UVSC Student Center Grande Ballroom.

Additional broadcasts will follow, including important coverage of the races for Utah County Commissioner Seat A and Utah County Clerk/Auditor. Both of these races will be determined at the Primary Elections on June 27th as there were no other candidate filings by other parties. All registered voters in Utah County are eligible to vote in both of these races that will establish leadership for four years in very significant positions.

The County Commissioner (Seat A) candidates are:

The County Clerk/Auditor Candidates are (no incumbent, open seat):

We will post a schedule of all broadcast times on our website as soon as they are made available.

We hope that you will join us in beginning a very appropriate Flag Day tradition – that of preparing an educated vote for the Primary Elections!

If you are interested in pursuing a little additional research on the origins of Flag Day and related history, we recommend the following resources:

National Public Radio’s Talk of the Nation featured a short interview by Joe Palka with Vexillologist (flag expert, from vexillum a military banner used by ancient Roman troops) Jim Ferrigan, as well as a discussion with the Chief Art Critic for the Washington Post in examining the flag as a piece of modern art. Included in Ferrigan’s interview was his quoting of President Woodrow Wilson (used above), from a speech made on the first federal observance of Flag Day.
