TO: All Utah County Residents FROM: Citizens’ Resource DATE: Memorial Day, May 29, 2006 RE: Prep for Primary Elections! Hear all candidates, one afternoon.
Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Jessica Connors, and I represent Citizens' Resource, a local nonpartisan neighbor-to-neighbor network whose mission is "to foster accessible & meaningful civic involvement by providing neutral forums & materials, and by promoting accountability to the public trust."
A busy summer is approaching! In the midst of so much activity, it can be difficult to prepare an informed vote for the upcoming Primary Elections to be held June 27th. We’d like to make it easier for you to fulfill your civic duty. Please join us for a unique event where you can actually meet the candidates and hear debates for every race on the ballot – all in one place and in just one afternoon. We’ve combined forces with Utah Valley State College to create this free, county-wide voter-education opportunity.
Our PRIMARY CANDIDATE EXPO will take place SATURDAY, JUNE 10th in the UVSC STUDENT CENTER BALLROOM (800 W. University Pkwy, Orem) from 12:30 PM – 4:45 PM.
This event will feature the only public debate in Utah County for the U.S. 3rd Congressional District, involving incumbent Representative Chris Cannon and his challenger, local multi-industry businessman John Jacob. If you’re trying to make up your mind on this race, don’t miss this chance!
A quick overview of the event schedule is as follows:
* 12:30 pm — Campaign Fair Opens to Public * 1:00 pm — Main Forum Call to Order, including:
U.S. 3rd Congressional Debate: CHRIS CANNON VS. JOHN JACOB
* 2:30 pm — Candidates for County Commission Seat A & County Clerk/ Auditor * 3:45 pm — Candidates for State House Districts 58 (N. Orem) and 61 (S. Orem, Provo, Vineyard)
As you reflect this Memorial Day on those you love who have gone before, please also remember those who have sacrificed their lives to secure the freedoms we so enjoy in our country. A pledge to make an educated vote is a fitting way to pay down on that debt of blood and tears that we owe to them.
You can also make a difference by informing your local friends, family members, neighbors and colleagues about this great occasion-- by encouraging them to attend with you. Announcements in church and civic newsletters, through corporate, educational and other email networks are also appreciated. (Please get appropriate permission as needed).
Feel free to contact me with any questions, or if you’d like to volunteer. Thank you for your efforts to properly exercise your right to vote and to publicize our event throughout the community. We look forward to seeing you there!
PLEASE NOTE – We are not associated with any party, candidate, or special interest group. We are simply a group of young families who wish to leverage our efforts to make voter-education a more convenient and effective process.
IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION FOR A DEBATE – Please categorize the election race (Ex. County Commissioner) that your question is intended for in the subject line, include your name & city of residence, and submit to .
PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO RSVP – Send a quick email to with your city of residence and the number attending. This info will help us in printing materials and setting up the right amount of chairs! Thanks!
NEED A BABYSITTER TO ATTEND? – We understand the problem. Here’s a possible solution, send one parent with the kids to enjoy the activities at Orem’s Summerfest (visit http://summerfest.orem.org for details) and the other parent our debates to take notes for his/her spouse!
BE CAREFUL NOT TO SHARE EMAIL ADDRESSES – We appreciate your taking the time to forward our invitation to other voters in Utah County. While doing so, please take measures to insure privacy by using the BCC field if your mail composer supplies one. Otherwise, put an open parenthesis at the beginning of the list of addresses you send to, as well as a close parenthesis at the end of the list – then they will not be made public.
